High-Protein Hemp Bircher

A celebration of Mother Nature’s hemp seed with a classic bircher museli.


Hemp seeds – the heart of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa– are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. They are incredibly nutritious and have an excellent 3:1 balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which promote cardiovascular health and are high in GLA, an essential omega-6 fatty acid that are associated with balancing hormones. They are also a perfect protein, containing all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce. Why not add them to your diet in a very simple way with this delicious bircher muesli?



PREP TIME:10 – 15 minutes (plus 8 hours or overnight soaking)


55 g (½ cup) hemp seeds, plus extra to serve

1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 tablespoons flaxseeds
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra to serve
¼ teaspoon vanilla powder or paste

125 g (½ cup) coconut yoghurt, plus extra to serve
185 ml (¾ cup) almond or coconut milk
1 green apple, grated
sweetener of your choice (such as liquid stevia or honey), to taste (optional)

fresh or frozen blueberries, to serve



You’ll need to begin this recipe a day ahead.

Place the hemp seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds, cinnamon, vanilla, coconut yoghurt and almond or coconut milk in a bowl and mix well to combine. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

The next morning, mix through the grated apple and sweetener of your choice, if desired, and spoon the bircher into two serving bowls or jars. Top with some extra yoghurt, the blueberries, some extra hemp seeds and a little extra cinnamon. Alternatively, layer it up as we’ve done here.
