Debunking myths surrounding everybody’s favourite gym buddy, protein.
What is it?
Protein is an essential macronutrient that builds tissues, repairs muscles, supports immune function and serves as a source of energy. It consists of amino acids, which are also known as the ‘building blocks’ of the body. Here are five misconceptions about this popular powder.
Myth #1: You must consume a LOT to see results
It's a common misconception that more protein equals more muscle mass. In reality, the body can only use a certain amount of protein for muscle building at any one time. Consuming extra protein won't necessarily accelerate muscle growth beyond a certain point. Instead, a balanced diet that includes sufficient protein, alongside proper training is typically the best way to feeling strong and toned.
Myth #2: Plant-based can’t do what meat can
While it's true that animal proteins like meat, eggs, and dairy are complete proteins (containing all essential amino acids), many plant-based proteins also provide all essential amino acids (like ours, which is formulated with Organic Pea Protein and Organic Brown Rice Protein).
Myth #3: A good protein can replace all meals
This is not true. Protein supplements should complement a balanced diet rather than replace meals. A balanced diet includes a range of nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals), not just protein. Also, relying solely on protein could also potentially cause nutritional deficiencies, which is not ideal when overall wellness is the goal.
Myth #4: Protein can be harmful
Studies have shown that protein intake within recommended levels (even moderate to high) does not negatively impact health. Although it is crucial to stay hydrated and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.
Myth #5: You can’t mix protein with other WelleCo products
Foundational WelleCo products (The Super Elixir, Nourishing Protein, Sleep Welle Tea and The Evening Elixir) can be taken, and are encouraged to be consumed, together.
