Here are the nutrients your liver needs to feed your skin

As WelleCo founder Elle Macpherson always advises, “you are what you absorb – the best facial is what you put inside your body”. Glowing, luminous skin takes more than just a good exfoliating serum or night cream. Your liver is the metabolic centre of your body, producing energy to sustain the thousands of functions performed every minute of every day by all the cells in your body.

Your liver gives energy to your hair follicles, skin cells and heart, so if your liver isn’t able to do its job, you’ll notice a decline in the appearance of your skin and hair, as well as feeling generally sluggish. “The highly respected and belated Professor T. Nostrant MD, Gastroenterologist referred to the liver as the ‘Grand Central station of the body’, due to its wonderful ability to co-ordinate where the goodness needs to go and which path the waste needs to travel,” says WelleCo formulator Dr. Simoné Laubscher Ph.D, a Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath.

When excessive toxins build up in the deeper layers of the skin, inflammation can start to occur. This can then result in skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, liver spots, red rashes, hives, psoriasis and acne, to name just a few conditions. It can also be responsible for premature ageing in the skin.

What To Feed Your Liver For A Healthy Glow

A healthy liver needs antioxidants that can be found in vegetables, particularly leafy greens. Antioxidants help to protect liver cells from damage whilst they’re detoxifying your bloodstream, as well as protecting your skin cells from free radicals and premature ageing.

You can also keep your liver happy by keeping hydrated, eating plenty of greens, getting enough fibre in your diet, exercising regularly and limiting toxins (such as drugs and alcohol).

Among the best nutrients for a healthy glow from within are:

Leafy greens: A daily dose of plant-based nutrients is a great way to target specific health issues, especially when your diet may be lacking. Supplement with The Super Elixir™, our iconic greens powder that

Vitamin C: Full of antioxidants that protect and brighten your skin. That’s why we included a natural source of vitamin C from Acerola Cherry in The Skin Elixir, our powerful greens capsules targeted to the skin that encourage a healthy glow from skin to soul.

Collagen: A protein that helps to strengthen the skin and smooth out fine lines. Our collagen stores begin to deplete as we age, which is why we formulated The Collagen Elixir, WelleCo’s supercharged, bioavailable powder that contains the highest dose of collagen from wild-caught fish, without the fishy taste. Taken daily, The Collagen Elixir supports radiant, hydrated skin and healthy hair and nails.

Turmeric: An herb that contains a vast amount antioxidants to help repair the liver cells, protect against cellular damage and assist in hormone metabolism. Turmeric, due to its contents of curcumin and curcuminoids, is particularly great at helping the liver to detox from heavy metals (such as those contained in many commercial cosmetic creams).

Brassica vegetables: Including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower, which contain sulphur that aids the detoxification process.

Avocado: The humble avo contains glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the liver from incoming waste and toxins, whilst also assisting it to eliminate chemicals from the body and protect against cellular damage.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Essential for a happy, healthy liver. Either fish oil or vegan DHA is fantastic for alleviating chronic skin problems like very dry skin, dermatitis or psoriasis.

Selenium: A mineral that exerts anti-inflammatory effects in the body and helps produce the anti-oxidant glutathione, is also a great supplement for general liver health.

Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes cell turnover and can help to prevent acne. You can benefit from vitamin A the natural way by including quality sources of beta-carotene in your diet, such as yellow, red and green fruits and vegetables – think red peppers, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, papaya and apricots.
