Wake-up call: Melanie Grant

Get your fix of wellness and things that inspire us.

We wake up with Melanie Grant, in-demand facialist to beautiful model faces including Nicole Trunfio, Catherine McNeil and Phoebe Tonkin.

Melanie works between Sydney, Melbourne and Paris, swears by topical Vitamin C and is a devout nightie wearer. Here she chats about how her mornings pan out.

IN BED

What do you wear to bed?

Always a white nightie. Either Celestine, a German brand and the most comfortable nightie you’ll ever own, or Hanro. Never pyjamas.

How do you dress your bed?

Always white linen, quilt, European pillows, silk pillows and quilted pillow shams. I’m a tummy sleeper so silk is essential - it prevents me from waking with creases or lines on my face. Sometimes I’ll add a throw with breakfast cushions from Yves Delorme.

What is on your nightstand?

A resin sea urchin sculpture.

Who do you sleep with?

My husband Jason, and if I’m lucky I get cuddles with my boys on Sunday mornings – the best!

How many hours do you sleep?

I’ve always needed 8 hours to look and feel good, however over the last 12 months I’m only sleeping around six hours. I think you need less as you age.

What time do you wake up?

Between 5.30am and 6.00am.

BODY

How do you work out?

I do a Pilates three times a week and walk there and back - it’s only about 500 meters each way, but it still counts! I need to make time for more exercise.

What is your first drink of the day and why?

500mls of room temperature alkaline water with lemon, to flush, rehydrate and alkalise my body. Followed closely by two coffees because I love it and life is short!

What’s for breakfast?

A smoothie with two teaspoons of THE SUPER ELIXIR, Sun Potion Adaptogens, spinach, blueberries, avocado, flaxseeds, bone broth, pea protein, probiotic powder, water and ice.

FACE

What is your morning beauty routine?

I cleanse my face in the shower with a gentle cleanser, Biologique Recherche lait VIP. I apply an antioxidant serum to protect my skin from environmental aggressors, usually SKINCEUTICALS CE Ferulic. I love Vitamin C as it really brightens and firms at the same time as protecting. I finish with an application of Eye Dr, then Babor SPF 50.

Your go-to beauty products?

So many! Standouts include Skinmedica HA5 for the ultimate mega boost of hydration to treat skin without oiliness. I love to apply this underneath makeup if I’m going out.

I love Christophe Robin for haircare, especially his Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea-Salt and Volumizing shampoo with rose extracts

Vintner's Daughter Active Botanical Serum is just beyond. This stuff is like magic, I apply both morning and night. It really nourishes my skin and gives a crazy level of dewy glow.

What are your go-to makeup products?

La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation. If I’m going out I mix a tiny amount into my moisturiser, but only in the evenings. I never wear foundation during the day.

Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate brightens without looking shimmery or sparkly. I like to smudge the darker colour onto my eyelids if I’m going out.

Chanel Inimitable Mascara in black, and Kevin Aucoin’s brow crayon in ash blonde.

What is your emergency go-to for a tired face?

Always an ice plunge. If I’m looking a little tired, sallow or puffy, I fill a large salad bowl with ice and chilled water and plunge my face around 10 times to flush lymph and fluid, whilst stimulating circulation. It makes my skin super glowy instantly.
