The Body Is Always Speaking. Are We Listening?

In Conversation: Elle x Will Cole

In a recent conversation between our founder Elle Macpherson and functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole, one idea surfaced again and again:

The body is always communicating. And more importantly — we are being invited to listen.

When “Normal” Doesn’t Feel Right

Many women today share a similar experience: feeling off, but being told everything is “normal.”

Normal blood work. Normal results. Normal range. And yet — fatigue lingers. Digestion feels unsettled. Mood fluctuates. Energy dips. As Dr. Will Cole explains, this disconnect is not imagined — it is a reflection of the world we are living in.

“Our biology hasn’t changed in thousands of years,” he shares. “But our environment has changed dramatically in a very short time.”

This creates what he describes as an epigenetic mismatch — a gap between how the body is designed to function, and how we are living. The result? A growing sense of dissonance. And often, a quiet intuition that something isn’t quite right.

The Wisdom of the Body

One of the most powerful reminders from this conversation is simple: Your body knows. Before symptoms become overwhelming, the body whispers. Subtle shifts in digestion. Changes in mood. Brain fog. Skin adjustments. Sleep disruptions.

These are not random — they are signals. And in functional medicine, these signals are seen as information, not inconvenience.

Dr. Will Cole brings the conversation back to something surprisingly simple: “Two to three ‘snakes’ a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s light, but grounded in real physiology — bowel movements as a daily signal of gut health. Not something to ignore, but something to observe. Because the body is always communicating, and digestion is one of its clearest languages.

As Elle shares from her own experience, learning to reconnect with these cues was a turning point in her wellness journey.

“I always come back to asking — what is my body trying to tell me?”

This shift — from ignoring to observing — is where Elle believes true empowerment begins.

The Gut: Your Second Brain

At the centre of this conversation sits the gut — often referred to as the body’s “second brain.” And for good reason. The gut and brain are intrinsically connected through what is known as the gut-brain axis — a communication system that influences mood, cognition, and emotional wellbeing. In fact:

  • Around 95% of serotonin (the “feel good” neurotransmitter) is produced in the gut
  • Around 50% of dopamine is also generated there
  • Approximately 75% of the immune system resides in the gut

This means the way you feel — mentally and emotionally — is deeply connected to how your gut is functioning. An unsettled gut can show up as:

  • Anxiety or low mood
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Hormonal imbalance

This is not separate from wellness. It is wellness. As Dr. Cole puts it, “Mental health is physical health.”

Understanding Inflammation

Another key theme in their conversation was inflammation — a word often used, but rarely understood.

Inflammation is not inherently negative. It is the body’s natural defence system — designed to heal, protect, and respond. But when inflammation becomes chronic — when it moves from short-term response to constant state — it begins to impact the entire system. It can show up in ways that feel disconnected:

  • Skin concerns
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Mood changes

Yet underneath, the root is often the same — a body out of balance. This is where nourishment becomes essential. Not restriction. Not elimination. Support.

Elle describes her introduction to greens as a turning point in understanding her own body.

“When we first started formulating the Super Elixir, we originally called them alkalising greens because of how powerfully they supported inflammation and balance,” she explains.

As those internal markers began to shift, the results became tangible — improved energy, deeper sleep, and visible changes in skin, hair and nails. It was a clear connection between what she was putting into her body and how it responded.

Dr. Will Cole notes, “Fruits and vegetables are some of nature’s most potent medicine cabinet.”

The Power of Simplicity

Perhaps the most grounding takeaway from Elle and Will’s conversation is this: Wellness does not need to be complicated to be effective. In fact, the opposite is often true. Both Elle and Dr. Cole return to the same principle — consistency over complexity. Because the most advanced wellness protocol means little if it cannot be sustained.

This is where simplicity becomes powerful. Small, daily routines. Nourishment that supports the body, rather than overwhelms it. Practices that feel natural, not forced.

As Dr. Cole shares, “The most important longevity tool isn’t something you can buy — it’s consistency.”

You Can’t Heal a Body You Hate

There is another layer to wellness that cannot be measured — but is deeply felt. The relationship you have with yourself.

“You can’t heal a body you hate,” Dr. Cole says.

While a simple idea and statement, it is quietly profound. Because the intention behind your wellness matters. Approaching health from a place of pressure, control, or perfection creates more stress — and stress itself is a driver of imbalance.

Whereas approaching wellness from a place of nourishment, self-respect, and compassion creates space for the body to respond. Research now supports what many have intuitively known: practices like self-compassion, connection, and emotional wellbeing can directly influence overall health.

Dr. Will Cole explains, “People that practice self-compassion… have lower inflammation levels.”

Wellness is not only what you eat. It is what you think. What you feel. How you live.

The Role of Choice: Epigenetics

One of the most empowering parts of this conversation lies in the concept of epigenetics. In simple terms: your genes are not your destiny.

While genetics may provide a blueprint, it is your lifestyle — your daily choices — that influence how those genes are expressed.

Nutrition. Sleep. Movement. Stress. Environment. These are not small factors. They are the levers that shape your long-term health. As Elle reflects, this understanding shifted everything:

“We have the ability to change the trajectory of our health — even if something runs in the family.”

There is a reason this conversation resonates so deeply. It moves away from perfection. Away from rigid rules and overwhelming protocols. And towards something more human. A way of living that allows for:

  • Flexibility
  • Simplicity
  • Consistency
  • Self-awareness

Because ultimately, wellness is not about doing everything. It is about doing what supports you — consistently, sustainably, and with intention.

With Wellness, You Can

This philosophy is at the heart of everything we create. Elle’s own journey began with a simple question:

How can I support my body, every day, in a way that feels natural and sustainable?

That question continues to guide us. Through formulations grounded in science, supported by nature, and designed to integrate seamlessly into daily life — not complicate it. When wellness becomes simple, it becomes consistent. And when it becomes consistent, it becomes transformative.

Dr. Will Cole notes, “The definition of longevity is adding life to your years — not just years to your life.”

Your body is always communicating. This is your invitation to listen. And to respond — with clarity, with compassion, and with care.
